Brewery Tour at Pivovar Kolkovna – Discover the Secrets of Brewing Beer
Czechs love beer – but do you know what really goes into making it?
As soon as the weather starts to warm up and you can feel spring in the air, you’ll begin spotting green beer in Czech pubs and restaurants all the way until Easter. And now, a special beer experience is arriving on tap at Pivovar Kolkovna! Introducing our new Matcha Pale Ale 12% – a seasonal green beer brewed with matcha tea.
Green Beer – Born in America
Green beer is most commonly associated with Maundy Thursday before Easter or with St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. Contrary to popular belief, the tradition of green beer didn’t originate in Ireland, but in the USA around 1910. Dr. Thomas H. Curtin created it using brilliant blue dye for his friends in New York. Since then, green beer has spread across the world – and made its way to the Czech Republic.
While some brewers use artificial dyes, others opt for natural ingredients like nettle, mint, chlorophyll, seaweed, or barley grass. At Kolkovna, we went for premium matcha green tea, giving the beer its natural green hue, distinctive aroma, and refined flavor.
Health Benefits of Matcha
Matcha has been consumed in Japan for centuries by samurai, Zen monks, and members of the upper classes. Its history dates back to the 12th century when the Buddhist monk Myoan Eisai brought it from China to Japan. For monks, matcha was a source of calm alertness during meditation—and according to ancient texts, even a path to enlightenment. Today we know that’s thanks to the synergy between caffeine and the amino acid L-theanine found in matcha.
Matcha is rich in antioxidants and supports heart health by regulating cholesterol. Thanks to the compound EGCG, it also aids fat burning, blood sugar regulation, and has anti-inflammatory effects.
Czech Hops Meet Japanese Tea
At Pivovar Kolkovna, we’ve created a craft beer special – Matcha Pale Ale 12%. This top-fermented beer features a generous dose of premium organic matcha Imperial A+ from Aichi Prefecture, replacing part of the hops during cold hopping. The matcha imparts a subtle green color and a smooth aroma and flavor, balancing the bitterness of Chinook, Willamette, and Citra hops.
The result is an unfiltered and unpasteurized beer with a rich base of Pilsner floor-malted barley. With 5% ABV and a balanced bitterness of 30 IBU, Matcha Pale Ale is perfect for those seeking an original brew without straying from true Czech craftsmanship.
Stop by for a glass of Matcha Pale Ale and welcome spring at Pivovar Kolkovna!
